Description

For the first time in its 215-year history, the United States Mint is offering a 24-karat gold bullion coin. The design is based on the original Indian Head Buffalo nickel. Containing one ounce of .9999 gold, these lustrous coins are among the world’s purest gold coins in terms of the fineness of the metal they contain. Each coin contains its full, stated weight of pure gold, which by law, must be taken from newly mined sources in America.

The American Gold Buffalo coin is struck each year in both bullion and proof, but only in 2008 was there a mintage of fractional-weight coins in this collection. In addition to the 2008-W ¼ oz Burnished American Gold Buffalo coin, the US Mint also prepared 1/10 oz and ½ oz coins for collectors.

All American Gold Buffalo coins revive the design of the Buffalo Nickel. Designed in 1913 by James Earle Fraser and in circulation from 1913 until 1938, the Buffalo Nickel featured frontier-themed designs that included a Native American leader’s portrait on the obverse and a bison on the reverse.

The obverse of all 2008-W ¼ oz Burnished American Gold Buffalo Coins includes the right-profile portrait of a Native American chieftain. Though not the depiction of one particular individual, Fraser did use the facial features of three real-world Native leaders of the day to come up with his portrait.

On the reverse of the 2008-W ¼ oz Burnished American Gold Buffalo is the image of Black Diamond, a powerful and massive bison that called New York City’s Central Park Zoo home in the early 20th century.

All of these American Gold Buffalo coins are a product of the United States Mint, and struck at the West Point Mint facility as denoted by the “W” mint mark on the coin’s obverse face in the lower-left corner.
